My Questions
Last updated on February 11th, 2022
This page presents a number of questions.
Answer these questions as per your music profile and what type of music partner you are looking to find. Based on these questions, the Muze app determines the best matches for your profile and shows them on the Matches page.
The Questions
What are you looking to do?
This is a single choice question for which mode we should be searching for.
- Join a band: this search mode will only display open positions in existing bands known as Band Vacancies
- Find musicians: this search mode will only display Musicians. Musicians might already be in a band, multiple bands, or no bands at all.
- Band & Musicians: this search mode will display both Band Vacancies and Musicians.
- Jamming: this new search mode searches for other musicians who are just looking to jam or collaborate for a short, certain period of time (with no interest of starting or joining a band). The matching algorithms for Jamming work different than the other three modes, so you may notice some questions are different. You can simply select the dates you are looking to jam, and you will be matched with other musicians who want to jam in your search area!
Where are you?
Here you can enter your location of where to center your search. It can be as broad as a city, or as specific as an address.
Only your city and state will appear on your profile for privacy-related reasons.
If you do not select a location, you will by default see users from all locations.
Currently Muze only supports locations in the United States.
How far should we look for musicians?
This is a numerical value for how far we will search from the location you entered in the previous question.
You can set this up to 100 miles.
Which instruments do you want your match to play?
This is a multiple choice question. Your search will display any musicians with at least one of the instruments you have selected listed in their own What instruments do you play? question.
This works vice versa, you will only see matches that are also looking for one your instruments played.
If you do not select any instruments, this is the same behavior as having all instruments selected.
Note: notice how this uses “or” logic. Users only need to have one of your instruments-not all.
What instruments do you play?
This is a multiple choice question. This is the inverse of the Which instruments do you want your match to play? question: you will only see matches that are looking for one your instruments played.
This works vice versa: your search will display any musicians with at least one of the instruments you have selected in the Which instruments do you want your match to play? listed in their own What instruments do you play? question.
Please enter your birthdate
This is an interactive calendar question. Selecting this will determine your age (which will update over your future birthdays).
Currently Muze does not allow any users under the age of 18.
This will not filter any results and is only used for our matching algorithm.
How experienced are you?
It’s never too early (or too late) to start playing music with others, and there is no shame in being in a different spot in your musical journey than others. However, you will benefit more from surrounding yourself with people that you can grow with. This is one of the things that makes Muze such an inclusive platform, while still providing a better match than anywhere else on the Internet!
This single choice question selects which best describes your experience level:
- Newbie (0-6 months playing): those who are just starting to learn the basics of an instrument. If you are in this stage, it is recommended that you are taking lessons.
- Beginner (6 months-2 years playing): those who have a good grasp of the fundamentals of their instrument but are still learning. Musicians at this stage are more likely to be starting a band for the first time.
- Skilled (2-5 years playing): those who have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of their instrument and are branching out to learn new techniques.
- Expert (5-10 years playing): those who have mastered the fundamentals of their instrument and are comfortable playing their instrument in any setting.
- Pro (10+ years playing): those who have mastered or nearly mastered their instrument to the point where they could teach others.
If you play more than one instrument, it is recommended that you select whatever is your primary instrument of choice.
Muze Tip: We use this system to use an objective scale to self-report experience. If you feel this value is not an accurate portrayal of your musical experience and skill, then no worries! Like all of these questions, you do not need to answer. Try uploading an audio or video file to your Media page and let your skill speak for itself!

What are your music goals?
Goals and expectations are extremely important to share within a band. In fact, goals and expectations that do not line up are one of the leading causes of band breakups.
This multiple choice question selects which goal(s) you have for your musical journey:
- Casual hobby: select this if you are looking to practice – possibly perform/record – but have no interest in making music your full time career.
- Get a record deal: this doesn’t always mean exactly a record deal with a label, but definitely indicates that you want music to be your professional life: recording, touring, and stardom!
- Jam: select this if you are just looking to have fun at jam sessions, but not necessarily form a band.
- If you truly don’t have an interest in starting a band, we recommend that you select Jamming in the What are you looking to do? question.
- Get experience: select this if you are still new to music and are looking to build upon your skills by growing with others. This is a good selection if you aren’t sure whether you want to be a career musician yet.
- Not sure: Select this if you don’t know where you’d like to go with your music but are open to people with all kinds of goals and expectations to learn from.
If you have any suggestions for other goals to add, please reach out to us to let us know!

What genres do you like to play?
This is a multiple choice question for selecting the genres that you enjoy playing. Please note that this may be different from the music that you enjoy listening to.
If you have any suggestions for other genres to add, please reach out to us to let us know!
Note: notice how this uses “or” logic. Users only need to have one of your genres-not all.
This will not filter any results and is only used for our matching algorithm.
Do you have a practice space?
This is a binary question indicating whether you have a place to jam or practice with others. You can always rent out a space if no one in your band has a place where you can practice together, but it certainly helps to have someone with an available space.
This will not filter any results and is only used for our matching algorithm.
What days of the week are you available to play?
This is a multiple choice question for which days of the week you are available to practice, perform, or otherwise meet with other musicians in your band.
Currently this is selected limited to days of the week.
Do you like being the center of the stage?
Ego. It has destroyed some of the greatest bands in history and unfortunately ruins some great relationships every day.
This is a binary question indicating whether you want to be a frontman or frontwoman and take a more “assertive” role in the band’s dynamic. There is no shame in knowing how much of the spotlight you want or don’t want, so the important thing is to be honest.
This will not filter any results and is only used for our matching algorithm.
How do you feel about sharing the spotlight with other members?
You may want to be center-stage, but you’re comfortable not being the only one there.
This is a binary question indicating that if you are the front(wo)man, whether you would be comfortable with another frontman or frontwoman in the band. Like the previous question, there is no shame in knowing what dynamic you prefer.
Like the previous question, this will not filter any results and is only used for our matching algorithm.
Would you like to connect your Spotify account to find musicians with similar tastes?
This interactive question syncs your Spotify account. We pull your unique listening tastes and find people with similar tastes as you do. This will update over time as you continue to use your account.
Note: while this is used to find people with similar music tastes, this may differ from what you or your match actually enjoy playing. We recommend also adding genres that you like to perform in the What genres do you like to play? question.
Note: currently Spotify is the only music streaming platform that we sync with Muze. We are working towards supporting other platforms – let us know which platforms you would like to see supported soon by reaching out to us!
This will not filter any results and is only used for our matching algorithm.
Muze Tip: The more questions you answer on this page, the better matches we can provide for your profile. Although all questions are currently optional to answer, it is highly recommended that you enter at the very least your location, search radius, instruments you play, and instruments you would like your match to play.
How Does Your Algorithm Match Musicians?
The Muze algorithm is based on the answers to your questions only. Users and organizations cannot sponsor or promote any listings on the Muze site. That way you know that recommendations on the Muze app are always the best connections for you based on merit alone.
The specifics of our algorithm are proprietary, and we have no plans for making this matching process public. This is primarily to prevent public manipulation of our matching and recommendation services. We are happy to give tips and explain functionality, but the actual matching algorithm will remain a “secret ingredient.”
